To properly upgrade Escape Velocity from version 1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, or 1.0.3 to version 1.0.4, you must extract all of the files that are in the update archive into your existing Escape Velocity folder. If you extracted them somewhere else, drag all of the extracted files into your Escape Velocity folder.
The "EV Plug-Ins" folder (and the items it contains) should be in your Escape Velocity folder as well. Do not place this folder or its contents into your System Folder -- Escape Velocity will not be able to find them there.
If you are upgrading from Escape Velocity 1.0.1, you'll need to throw the old "EV 1.0.1 Plugin" file into the trash. Only the "EV Tuner" plug-in, and any third-party plug-ins you may have should be in the "EV Plug-Ins" folder.
Pilot files from previous versions of Escape Velocity do work fine with Escape Velocity 1.0.4, however if your pilot file was saved with inconsistent data as the result of a bug in prior versions, it would be advisable to start a new pilot. For instance, if your pilot has a Rebel ship, but no Manta bays (a bug in 1.0.0), Escape Velocity 1.0.4 cannot retroactively fix this situation. You'll need to start a new pilot, or get a new ship.
